One of the most exciting tourism destinations in Africa, the North-West province awaits visitors with some of the finest wildlife reserves, cultural sites, archeological treasures, and entertainment resorts. Located in the crater of an extinct volcano, the Pilanesberg nature reserve conserves many of the mammal species including the Big Five, while the Madikwe Game Reserve, situated against the Botswana border, is one of South Africa's prime safari destinations.

One of the first inhabitants of the area, the Australopithecus africanus, was discovered in the form of a child's skull at Taung in 1924...some millions of years later, the contemporary Homo Sapiens amble at the state-of-the-art entertainment mecca at Sun City and the Lost City Resort, and delights in the sampling of mampoer at Groot Marico. Other major attractions not to be missed are the gold mining sites in Potchefstroom, De Wildt Cheetah Research Centre, Hartbeesport Dam and craft market, the Lesedi Cultural Village, the Tswaing Crater in Winterveld, and the capital of the Province, Mafikeng, home to the Barolong people.
